hanging on by a thread

By March I'm getting desperate for some sunshine and fresh air.   I do not enjoy a snowstorm that was supposed to be 6 inches turning into 48 hours of non stop snow that dumped 2 feet on the ground.   On the bright side,  it was close to 45 degrees once it stopped snowing and I got both sunshine and fresh air this weekend.  At least snow doesn't stay on the ground too long in March!

My brother and I The kids made a giant snowman on Saturday.   We They are so talented!

He's an Irish snowman,  natch.  There's actually quite a lot of Irishness in that picture.   I'm not sure how much Irish blood my niece and nephew have in them but they are at least half Irish and my Baby Girl is also half Irish.   So among the three kids at least 1.5 of them is Irish.  There's an interesting fact for you.

Also, by "Irish",  I do mean "American whose ancestors hailed from the Emerald Isle".   I'm not sure any of them know what or where Ireland is.   Though their grandfather is an Irish citizen who has been to Ireland exactly once.   Who knew that was even possible?

And on that topic,  if someone says "top of the morning to you" on March 17,  please respond  "and the rest of the day to yourself".   Drives me crazy that no one ever responds appropriately.

March 8th

We are so done with this. I bet Andrew is happy to have over a foot of snow! I'd love to help, but someone's got to watch Sesame Street with the kids!

(sorry, I always forget to hold my phone sideways when I take video!)

Monday is supposed to be 58 degrees.   Think over a foot of snow will melt in 72 hours??  We hope so!

Only in New England

I took this picture on Monday when it was in the 60's.   It was my Little Man's first time in the swings.   He wasn't quite sure at first and then he loved it!  His little legs were kicking up a storm.

Fast Forward to Wednesday - Baby Girl is outside making snowmen and snow angels.  Seriously, these pictures were taken about 48 hours apart!

Hey Hey we're the Monkees!

Oh Davy,  so sad.  I know technically I am too young to remember the Monkee's,  but my brother and I watched repeats of the TV show in the early 80's and we loved it.   And who doesn't love Day Dream Believer? I actually saw him perform live at Saint A's during parents weekend.   We'll always have the Dana Center, Davy.

We haven't had any sort of accumulation since October 2011.  Today is March 1, 2012 and as you can see, Andrew had to clean off the car this morning before he left to drop off Baby Girl at school.  There may be an inch out there!  Oh, this horrible New England winter!

I shouldn't make fun of the winter,  New England winters really are awful but we somehow lucked out this year.  Last year was brutal and next year could be too.    Baby Girl was SO excited to bring her snow suit to school today,  and I put her snow boots on to walk to the car... that wasn't quite necessary as the inch of snow had been shoveled,  but who am I to interfere with a 2.5 year old's love of the snow?

So, it's March 1st.   Spring is almost here,  though you would never know from the weather outside.   Realistically when you live as far north as I do we don't get actual spring weather until May,  but March 1 is a little bit closer to that!

Question for the moms of younger kids:   Shohuld I get a Rock and Play?  They didn't exist when Baby Girl was a baby so I obviously didn't have one with her.   But it just looks so convenient... and people rave about them.   I've heard one complaint:  it can be hard to transition the babies to a crib or basinett because they aren't used to sleeping on flat surfaces.  I was thinking it would be good to bring to the cape as well, to give me (hopefully) a better place to put him while I'm running around after his sister.   So what do we think?  yes?  no?

I gotta go to Saint Somewhere...

Winter finally came.   The temperature was hovering just around 0 all weekend.   As you can see,  Baby Girl loved it in all her purple snow monster glory.    I was in jeans fleece coat.  We were not dressed for the same season at all and I was FREEZING.

I was really getting used to the 60 degree weather - I did find it a bit odd that the grass was still green in January,  but I'm not about to look a gift horse in the mouth.   It's back into the 30's tomorrow and should stay there for the rest of the week,  so I'm pretty excited about that.  111 more days until Memorial Day Weekend!

busy busy busy

Here we are again, winding down yet another crazy weekend. Andrew and I went skiing at Gunstock Mountain on Saturday, which meant packing up our skiis (and we're currently missing a key component of our ski racks, so they had to go in the car), skiing gear, 2 days worth of clothing for the three of us, food and toys for our Baby Girl, and lastly - the child herself, and cram it all into a teeny Corolla. Then we re-packed everything and went home this morning. It was a lot of work for one day of skiing. But we all got to visit with family and Baby Girl was spoiled (natch) so we all had a lot of fun.

But my god, I am tired. Baby Girl has a nasty cold and they don't make cold medicine for toddlers. Apparently they used to make it - when I discovered that baby cold medicine used to exist, I was so much less confused. I did not understand why parents of teenagers and older kids were so befuddled over the fact that I don't give BG cold medicine. Apparently it existed when their kids were younger - but alas, it does not now. It all got pulled from the shelves about a decade ago and the FDA won't allow it to be sold anymore. Something about little babies getting over medicated and then ODing on the stuff. Yuck.

Anyway, the point of that ramble is that baby girl has a cold, short of steaming her out a few times a day in a very steamy bathroom, there is nothing I can do. Which means she isn't sleeping very well and the 3 of us shared my nephew's bedroom for two nights (and he was banished to the couch. I have guilt over that). None of us really slept. She was sneezing, wheezing, and coughing all night. I was constantly sticking my head in her pack'n'play, trying to make sure she wasn't chocking on all the phlegm she was coughing up, and Andrew just couldn't sleep through the commotion. We are all tired bunnies today. Plus - Andrew and I had a full day of skiing yesterday! We are not used to so much exercise!

Recap: busy weekend. BG has a cold. No one slept.

And it's time to go back to work!

It's coming... I know it

Spring has to come around again, right? I mean at some point during the calendar year of 2011 it WILL be warmer - at least I think this is the case. In the middle of winter it's so hard to comprehend the thermometer hitting anything about 40. But I think we're getting there... there hasn't been any real accumulation with snow in eight days (EIGHT DAYS! That's longer than a week!), it's still light out till 5:15ish, daylight savings is less than 2 months away.

I just don't know how much longer I can deal with this. This is usually the time of year I start perusing real estate listings in North Carolina and dreaming of ways of getting jobs in Charlotte.

I just want Spring. I want 50-60 degree weather, I want to be able to take a walk after dinner, I want to take Baby Girl to the park, I want to see the grass, not 3 feet of snow, I want leaves on the trees and birds chirping!

Last year we had this freakish heat wave in March. It was around 90 degrees for a few days and then dropped down to the 80's for a few more days. It was a nice break, but the best part about it was the trees bloomed early because of it. We had trees with actual leaves on them in early April. That generally doesn't happen until May around here. Fingers crossed it can happen again!!

ow...

My friend let me borrow her copy of the Gold's Gym Dance Workout for the Wii. Let's just say it's not the workout for me. The dance part of the workout is Latin Dance. I'm not a Latin Dancer... I have no rhythm, I can never find the beat, and my limbs are flying everywhere. I'm a danger to small children and animals. At one point I was suposed to be doing the salsa, and I was seriously doing an Irish jig. I tried really hard to mimic what the game was doing, but it came out like a jig. I still don't know how that happened.

The jury is still out as to whether or not I will be buying a copy for myself. There was some kickboxing that I did enjoy, so I'm going to give it another shot tomorrow night and see if the kick boxing can make up for the Latin Dance. Kick Boxing requires much less rhythm. Less chance I will knock over a lamp. (I would like to point out that I did gymnastics for 8 years and figure skating for 14 years. STILL NOT GRACEFUL)

Why is there a Short Chubby Girl dance? I should create one - it will involve the jig and waving your arms over your head. Really, as long as your hear rate is up, who cares if you can salsa?

Also... I left work on time today, which I hadn't done in quite a while and it was light out when I left!!! Granted, I leave work at 4, but I swear the week before Christmas it was already pitch black when I walked out the doors of work. Not the case now! Whoo hoo! Winter has barely started, but I'm already seeing signs of it ending!

On that note, we are supposed to get another storm on Friday. I am going to work on Friday. Please pray to whatever deity, spiritual being, alien overlord, or whatever you believe in that A) I make it home Friday afternoon and B) my little Carolla also makes it home Friday afternoon!

I didn't want to admit this, but I haven't started my scrapbook yet. Feel free to yell at me.

Happy New Year!

Per usual, Andrew and I had a quiet New Year's Eve. We got Thai food (didn't feel like waiting for Chinese) and rented The Town. I actually stayed awake to watch the ball drop and we had a glass of champagne. Pretty exciting stuff! There was a time in my life when I actually went out on New Years Eve... that was before this boogaloo took over my life:

She's starting to answer to Boogaloo, and try to say it. Oops! Sorry the picture is blurry, I didn't realize it when I was taking them, and I have no photo editing software. But you get the point.

What are your resolutions? I actually don't have any this year. I really don't want to examine my life that closely, I don't know if I'll be happy with what I see!

However, I do have some goals for the new year. One is to start and keep up with a 2011 family scrapbook. I made a 2008 one, started making a 2009 one, but stopped, and I have one from June 23, 2009 through June 23, 2010... so I'm all over the place. But I'm committed to getting at least one page for each month of 2011 done. I'm going to start with Christmas (maybe Thanksgiving?) for the 2011, which is slightly cheating, but this way I will still have all of my girl's holiday seasons captured.

In order to accomplish this goal, I need to dedicate some time each week to scrapbooking. I don't have a good place to do set up my stuff at home - which means I have to take it all out and put it all away every time I want to work on it. So I always find an excuse to not work on my books, which is how we ended up with only a 2008 scrapbook completed! I'm not sure how I'm going to get this done, but I'll be happy in 20 years that I did it... if I don't jump off my balcony in a fit of frustration when I don't have room to do ANYTHING!

Happy and Healthy New Year to all of you!

stir crazy

Fear not, dear readers. I did not trek into work today! Though I totally could have gone in this afternoon if daycare had been open. The roads are fine. We only got a foot of snow, so the storm wasn't as bad as predicted in terms of actual snowfall. But the wind was really bad and there are crazy snowdrifts.

Baby girl is DONE with being stuck at home, and it's only been a day and a half. She literally had a 20 minute temper tantrum where she stood in the corner, put her hands on the wall and hysterically cried. If I tried to go near her she would get so upset that she'd start to shake and scream " NO MAMA NO MAMA NO MAMA".

Did I get that on tape? Obviously. I did feel badly for her though, she's sick and teething, and is sick to death of her 881 SF of living space. We did take her outside yesterday to give her a few minutes of running around, but it's really cold and windy today and she's still too little to really enjoy it. So inside we stay...

good idea? bad idea?

Andrew and I went skiing today at Wachusett (mountains of fun, minutes away!). For my one and only day of skiing this year, it went okay. The conditions and weather were good, but not great. My skiis are in terrible shape. I am in terrible shape. But I did the best I could, didn't fall, and saw a very good friend that I hardly ever get to see anymore. I was happy to ski, happy to see my friend, and it felt GOOD to be outside. When I was younger and would come in from a day of sailing my mother would always ask if I bled or if I cried. If the answer was no, then it was a good day. I guess I can officially call today a good day.

We got a lot of runs in, since the mountain wasn't too crowded and it's not that big in the first place. I can do black diamonds there, so I felt good about my skiing ability. I'm exhausted now. Skiing once a year can take a lot out of you!

My baby is sick with a nasty head cold and cough. It's breaking my heart. If only you could give a baby cold medicine! I stopped nursing her two weeks ago. And now she has a cold. WHY DID I STOP????

Busy weekend and random thoughts

I worked on Baby Girl's scrapbook Friday night with a friend. I actually got two pages done - one I think came out well, and one was a disaster. But it's little more than a filler page, so I'm leaving it alone. When I'm done with the book, I might go back and do something else. I wish I had more time to work on my books, but I do enjoy my nights! I'm going with some other friends in two more weeks for a night of scrapping. I think Andrew is getting a little sick of me disappearing every Friday, but I like it :)

Baby Girl is going to get a little cousin this summer, and luckily for us it is going to be a boy! We need a little boy in this family, and this meant that BG got a bunch of her older cousin's hand me downs. I was pretty excited about that, we were having a bit of a pants problem lately. She had about 5 pairs of pants that actually fit, and now we have at least a dozen! I love hand me downs!!! And I'm thrilled to have a nephew, little boys are so much fun.

We spent an hour at Babies R Us this morning and came home with a new stroller for BG. We ultimately decided on an umbrella stroller for her. We didn't go with a travel system when she was born because we thought they were too big and bulky - we used the car seat and a Snap n Go. When we were wheeling the full sized strollers up and down the aisles of BRU today, we still thought they were too bulky. I guess we just aren't full sized stroller or travel system people! So this is BG's ride for the next few years:

It's the Maclaren Quest Sport. She seemed to like it in the store, hopefully it continues to meet her strolling needs. Now we just need to get a jogging stroller down the cape and we will be all set!

Is anyone else looking forward to Parenthood on NBC once the Olympics are over? I think it looks like it could end up being a good show. I'm fearful that I will always see Lauren Graham as Loralei Gilmore, but that probably won't happen to people who haven't seen every episode of Gilmore Girls at least 3 times.

I am SO DONE with winter. SO DONE. I know, I know, I live in New England, I should be used to it. It hasn't been a particular snowy winter here, though it has been almost everywhere else. But it's just so cold and so dark and I've been stuck inside for so many months. On Saturday I was going out of my skin and I was thisclose to bundling up my niece and taking her out to the park to play. I'm praying for a semi warmish March. I need to get out of this house!

I created a trending topic on Twitter. #overpricedbabygear. Watch it.

January

I know I should have a nice snow picture for January, but I can't bring myself to take a picture of the snow right now. It's only January 2nd, and I'm already done with winter. So instead I found this picture, it was taken in Maine at Val's wedding in September. It's one of my favorites from that weekend. Maybe by February I can get a really nice snow picture. I'll try, at any rate.

In an effort to not get so much take out, Andrew and I made homemade fish and chips last night. We over cooked the fish, but it was still good. And the fries were really yummy. While it was no fish and chips platter from the British Beer Company it was still pretty good. I'm not in love with it yet; the recipe still needs tweaking, but once I get there, I'll post it for you.

This weeks starts 5 months without a single day off. The powers that be at my company have deemed it unnecessary to have a single day off between January 1st and Memorial Day. This has never mattered to me before because of my flex time - but now that I am not on flex time, I'm a bit concerned. I don't want to take vacation days in the winter so I can sit at home and stare at the TV all day, but I may have to. It's not healthy to work 5 full months without a day off. I will try to work as long as I can though and hopefully wait until late March before I take a day or two.

And that's all I have today.

snowy Sunday and turkey chili

Last night was the first significant snowfall of the season. We got a few inches, just enough to make the world look like a Winter Wonderland. And I made my turkey chili today, so it's officially winter. I make a really good turkey chili - it's a Weight Watchers recipe, but you wouldn't know it. It has a lot of flavor and you can easily add or subtract ingredients so anyone will like it. We don't add the chili flakes, and we put 3 times as much garlic as it needs. Yummy. Here it is - I'm telling you, it's easy to make, it makes at least 6 servings so it's great for leftovers and lunch, and it's a guaranteed crowd please. You'll thank me.

1tsp canola oil
1 large onion (chopped)
2 medium garlic cloves, minced (I buy jars of pre-minced garlic. It's worth it)
2 medium carrots, thinly sliced into rounds
1 pound lean ground turkey
2 tbsp chili powder
1 tbsp paprika
1 tsp ground cumin
1 1/2 tsp ground red pepper flakes (I leave this one out, and add more garlic instead)
2 medium tomatoes, chopped
1 cup canned tomato sauce
1 cup fat free chicken broth (okay, I will admit it. I don't use fat free)
1 1/2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
1 1/2 cup cooked kidney beans, rinsed and drained (I just use the whole can, I don't know it that's 1.5 cups or not)
1 medium bell pepper, chopped)
1/2 tsp table salt, or to taste
1/8 tsp black pepper, or to taste

heat a lard pot coated with cooking spray, over medium heat. Add oil and onion; saute onion until soft. Add garlic and carrots and cook until garlic is softened. Add ground turkey and brown meat, about 5 minutes. Stir to break up lumps.

Add chili powder, paprika, cumin, and red pepper flakes, tomatoes and tomato sauce, broth and vinegar. Bring mixture to a boil and reduce heat. Cover and simmer until meat is tender, 30 to 45 minutes.

Add beans and pepper. Simmer, uncovered, until peppers are done, about 10 minutes. Season to taste. Yields about 1 cup per serving

I'm not currently following weight watchers, but if you are, this is a Core recipe, or 4 Points per serving.

Goodbye January!!

I won't miss you! Even though February is just as cold and snowy as January, I like it so much better It's a mental thing with me - it's still deep in the middle of winter, but it's lighter at night and March is just around the corner. March still means cold weather and snow, but there's also periods of spring-like weather. Clearing January is the first hurdle of getting rid of winter, and it's gone!

naptime!

Andrew and I both had today off and we were out all day running errands. When we got home around 4, we both fell into bed for a nap. I haven't napped in a long time - it felt so good. I think every day should have a naptime built into it. I would so much more productive after work if I could sleep for an hour or two after lunch.

We're off to Keene this weekend - where it's supposed to be 1 degree. That's right. One degree. I love New England, but there are times when Key West is calling me home.

and it's over...

All of our holiday celebrations are over. Time to rest up for about 9 months before it starts again! Most of our presents are put away now - thanks to a small scare we had about losing a gift certificate... 30 minutes, 2 frantic phone calls, 1 car ripped apart, and the decimation of every piece of gift wrapping in the house later, it was located at my parents' house. THANK GOD. We got a lot of nice things and for the most part people seemed to like what we gave them.

Now we focus on..... nothing. There's nothing exciting going on in our lives until the middle of May when we both finish up our semesters and graduate. Then there's the whole arrival of the baby. Actually, January and February weekends will be spent doing things we need to get done before the baby arrives including cleaning out his bedroom, getting rid of some furniture, buying more furniture, cleaning out the attic, and other fun things like that. Not as much fun as skiing, but I guess the baby has to sleep somewhere. And in something other than a cardboard box.

So that's our life right now, a whole lot of nothing for the foreseeable future. If you have any bright ideas on what we can do to entertain ourselves, leave some suggestions!

37 hours of snow

Well, it really was a Winter Wonderland from 2pm Friday afternoon through 3am Sunday morning. I don't know the official snow amounts, but I'd say my area got in the 1.5 foot range. It's kind of hard to tell because the wind created some pretty big snow drifts. It was a crazy storm - it just wouldn't end. It must have been powered by the Energizer Bunny, because it literally kept going and going and going.... I enjoyed the storm. I really do like snow, and in December I'm not sick of it yet. It was another slap in the face, reminding me that I can't ski this winter, but I'm starting to accept that (okay, no I'm not, but I try to tell myself that I am)

These pictures were taken about 2:30 on Friday afternoon. It looks like any other dusting of snow.

Then we fast forward about an hour and a half to 4pm

You can see the plow has already been through. The plowing company would return many many times.

Now we fast forward again, this time a few hours to about 7pm. Andrew and I went outside to see what we could see (and also to take the trash out). We waked around the complex a bit, and by that time, the snow was halfway to my knees - or depending on where we were walking, all the way up to my knees.
And then we went inside and watched Fellowship of the Ring, and watched the snow fall from inside. The next morning, around 9:00ish we went outside to clean off the cars and move them to already plowed sots. I had to shovel my way around the car before I could get near enough to it to get off the snow.
And this morning about 8:30, 5 hours after it had finally stopped snowing, I took these pictures of the total snowfall. We might get more snow later tonight, some stations are saying wintry mix and some are saying straight snow. We'll have to wait and see!

It's the end of the world as we know it

Okay, maybe not. But it is almost the end of summer, and to me there's not much of a difference. I have another week of work, and then next week is my annual Week Off From Work. I'm very excited. I'm more excited that as time of publication, in 9 months, 1 week, and 5 days I won't be forced to take the last week of summer as my vacation. In fact, I could take 2 weeks off from work if I want! The possibilities are endless, really.

Anywho, back to present day. I'm very excited to be on vacation, but I am NOT excited that it is the last week of summer. That just sucks. I do enjoy fall weather, but I like summer weather better, and the fall weather means winter is just around the corner. I only tolerate winter for skiing, but those endlessly long months are painful. It's just a long dark cold monotonous mess. And it's only 4 months away!

But I still have 2 weeks of summer and I need to keep reminding myself about things I like about fall/ winter

* the smell of the air in fall
* sweater season! (chubby girls love sweater season!)
* TV shows come back on
* apple scented candles
* back to school ads STOP playing
* the 1st snow of the season (as long as I don't have to drive in it)
* PATRIOTS!!!! (and my favorite facebook group - The Patriots Beat You Because You Suck, so Get Over It!)
* the first skiing run of the day when I've managed to get up early enough to ski the corduroy.

But today? Today I'm going to the beach.
