Well a lot happened this weekend and I have about 10 minutes before Baby Girl will inevitably throw some sort of fit, so here we go:
* Smash. I finally watched it on Friday night. I don't know what I think yet... I'm already over the story line of who is going to be Marilyn, and I fast forwarded most of the songs. But I love Debra Messing, and I like Katherine McPhee as well (I don't watch Idol, so I really had no idea what she could do). I'll probably give it a few more tries and then decide. I could use a Monday night show though, so I'm leaning towards watching the whole season.
* Whitney. I probably shouldn't have been shocked, but I was. Hell, I was surprised when Amy Winehouse died, so I guess it doesn't take much to surprise me. Whitney's self titled album was my very first CD and I played that thing non stop. I probably still have it up in my attic, along with my Bodyguard soundtrack. I hate that we keep losing all these talented people to drugs and other substance abuse problems.
* I really want to watch The Bodyguard now. And you know what, my mother can't send me out of the room to get her a glass of water during the sex scenes anymore!
* Baby Girl will be sleeping in her Brand New Toddler Bed tonight!!!
She is really excited about it. I'm sad that she's out of the crib
because I could stick her in that crib at 7:30 and there she would stay
until 6:30 the next morning. But she figured out how to climb out of
it last week and this way she has a long time to separate herself from
the crib and hopefully be okay with it when the Little Guy takes over.

sorry
I know I haven't been posting much lately. We no longer have a power source for the laptop, and the desktop is 7.5 years old and is so full of crap that it literally takes 25 minutes to start and then for a program (ie firefox) to open can be another 10 minutes. We are talking painfully slow. Until we replace the power cord to the laptop, I'm afraid posting is going to be way lighter than usual.
In my absence, Amy Winehouse has died, which was tragically not surprising. Sad, yes - but not surprising. The woman had a very public battle with drugs and alcohol and she either had no desire to attempt to get her addiction under control or it just proved to be too much for her. Either way, her life was cut way too short because of her addictions.
Which brings me to my point. I cannot stand Katy Perry's song "Last Friday Night". Call me old, call me a prude, whatever - but that song sends the wrong message to kids/tweens/teens/college students.
There's a stranger in my bed,
There's a pounding my head
Glitter all over the room
Pink flamingos in the pool
I smell like a minibar
DJ's passed out in the yard
Barbie's on the barbeque
There's a hicky or a bruise
Pictures of last night
Eended up online
I'm screwed
Oh well
It's a black top blur
But I'm pretty sure it ruled
Last Friday night
Yeah we danced on tabletops
And we took too many shots
Think we kissed but I forgot
Last Friday night
Yeah we maxed our credit cards
And got kicked out of the bar
So we hit the boulevard
Last Friday night
We went streaking in the park
Skinny dipping in the dark
Then had a menage a trois
Last Friday night
Yeah I think we broke the law
Always say we're gonna stop-op
Whoa-oh-oah
This Friday night
Do it all again
This Friday night
Do it all again
Trying to connect the dots
Don't know what to tell my boss
Think the city towed my car
Chandelier is on the floor
With my favorite party dress
Warrants out for my arrest
Think I need a ginger ale
That was such an epic fail
Pictures of last night
Ended up online
I'm screwed
Oh well
It's a blacked out blur
But I'm pretty sure it ruled
That is not the lesson I want my Baby Girl learning. I don't want her thinking it's okay to get so trashed that you black out, you wake up with someone you don't know in your bed, max out your credit cards on alcohol, etc. I know, it's just a song, I shouldn't be so up in arms about it... but abusing alcohol KILLS PEOPLE. IT RUINS LIVES. Having fun with friends at a party or a bar - that's fine. That's more than fine. In fact, I'm counting the minutes until Friday night when I am going out with some friends for margaritas. But living the life in Katy Perry's song isn't that far off from Amy Winehouse's life - only Amy also did hard core narcotics - and it's not okay. It's not a good message to send to the listeners of top 40 pop music. Not knowing if you have a hickey or a bruise and having no idea who is lying in the bed next to you - that makes you a ho-bag. And no one wants that kind of reputation.
Okay, I'm stepping off my soapbox. My beer is getting warm :)

Well...
I completely gave up on Netflix tonight; it's been established it has nothing to offer. While running around like maniacs at Shaws with a very sick baby girl (in our defense, we truly thought she was doing better. She doesn't make it easy to tell when she's sick!) trying to pick up what we needed, I wandered over to the Red Box and rented the first movie that A) I recognized the title, and B) I had a minor interest in: Country Strong.
Some of you may (or may not) know that I am a big fan of country music. And not just the pop Taylor Swift/ Carrie Underwood pop/country songs that are so en vogue right now. I really enjoy the twangy, straight from Nashville country music. When I was a freshman in college an acquaintance put Kenny's "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy" on my computer (and yes, chances are it was stolen on Napster - what did you expect, I went to college in the fall of 1999!) and I never looked back.
Also, did you know tonight is Game 5 of the 1st round of playoffs in which the Broonz are facing off against the Canadiens?
So the scene has been set: I have a movie that I want to watch and that Andrew most likely has no interest. I want the B's to win it all, but I don't want to watch the game. Therefore and henceforth, I watch a movie on the laptop and Andrew paces and watches the game.
Wow.
Wow.
That movie is not what I expected. I'm not sure what I expected, but it wasn't that movie. Clearly I'm not that talented of a writer that I can explain how good the movie is without giving anything away, but I really really really liked it. It had about 17 more layers to it than I thought it would - and to be honest, I didn't think it would be that good. It was one of those movies that I don't think I would have understood even 5 years ago. You need to have lived a little to get it - not a whole lot, but enough to understand that love isn't doesn't always resemble a romantic comedy, and tragedy doesn't always resemble Romeo and Juliet.
Go out and watch it. Get it from Red Box, because God knows it's not on Netflix. And remember, I am a big country fan... I honestly don't think that would make a difference, but they do sing their fair share of country songs in the movie. If this was set among a death metal background, I can't say for sure that I would have enjoyed it as much.
And on a non-movie note - think good thoughts for my baby girl; she's really not feeling well these days.

Spring ahead!
Daylight savings is this weekend!! Wooo!!!
I'm actually not thrilled to be driving to work in the dark (again), but I'm loving that extra hour of daylight at the end of the day! I'd really love to take walks with BG at night before she really gets too old for the stroller and fights us on it. But, we have no room for the jogging stroller here, so we keep it at my parents house for walks around Marina Bay and then the cape during the summer. Our Maclaren is a fabulous umbrella stroller, but it just wasn't designed for bumpy suburban sidewalks. Hopefully we can get outside somehow - it still needs to warm up though, it's only been in the 30's this week. Above freezing, yes - but still really cold!
Andrew and I were watching an old episode of 30 Rock last night (which was new to us, as we only starting catching up on it on Netflix this year) and there was a comment about Tupac being alive. Sure, it was meant to be funny, but I have firmly believed that Tupac is alive since the day that he "died". I scoff at every other conspiracy theory out there, but I'm telling you, Tupac is alive!!
- he was cremated the day after he was "murdered". Since when do murder victims not have autopsies? "
- he has released countless new songs after his death. I'm sure any artist who is "killed" in his prime has unreleased recorded songs, but Tupac seems to have a million of them
- in two of his videos that were not released until AFTER he "died", he is wearing shoes that were not available until after his death.
- Tupac vehicle was shot 12 times and Suge didn't get hit once, He was 'grazed' by a bullet, Why did Tupac get shot all those times and Suge not get hit?
I'm telling you, the man is alive.
Okay, so I wouldn't gamble my life savings on it, but if it ever came out that he didn't really die from that altercation, I will NOT be surprised!

random
I have the lyrics from Everclear's "I will buy you a new life" running through me head. Why? I don't know. I haven't heard that song in years.
I will buy you a new life
perfect shiny and new
that song is really depressing if you think about the lyrics. Which I can honestly say I have never done before today.
Anyway, back to 2011.
Andrew bought us a new house phone last night because our other one died. This one is snazzy and has orange lights. It's main selling point is that it only cost $20. And given that we only use our house phone when I am working from home, even $20 seems a bit much for a phone.
And to end my random ramblings, Baby Girl had a bad drop off this morning at daycare. She saw me leaving and freaked out. I know that in 5 minutes she was fine, and that if I had gone back inside I would have made it worse. But there is nothing worse than leaving your child crying. Even if you know that they will be okay. Baby Girl LOVES school and her friends and is always talking about them. I know she's happy there, and I know she just freaked out because she saw me leave. But that doesn't make it easier.
Unfortunately, we did NOT win megabucks last night, so I will continue to be a working mother for the foreseeable future... dammit

whoa
Well that was an action packed Thanksgiving!
All I did for 5 straight days was eat and drink. By Sunday night I wanted to crawl into bed and never get up. But it was a really fun weekend.
And tonight we have Rudolph and The Grinch on TV... which means it's Christmas time! yay!
And on a non holiday note, I won a raffle at work which yielded me a new iPod nano. I am now the owner of a classic iPod, an iPhone, an iPod shuffle, and an iPod Nano!
Guess how often I listen to any of them.
Yup.
Never.
I would if I had an input in my car to listen to such a device, but apparently they weren't considering iPods in 2003 when my little car was manufactured. I am able to rock out to tapes though, because apparently people still needed tape decks in 2003. That one gets a big DER to Toyota!
And the Nano has a video camera in it, which my iPhone does not - I have a really old iPhone. So I'm pretty excited about that. Because I'm hopeful that I will not only keep my nano charged, but also have it with me and at the ready when Baby Girl does something cute.
HA!

Adios and vaya con Dios
(does it bother anyone else that the lyric is in Spanish AND English? It should be "Adios y vaya con Dios")
Oh, Zac Brown Band. How you make me want to jump on a plane with my little family and never come back. Except to visit the rest of my family. Or maybe they can come with me, the Caribbean is big enough for all of us. Other songs that make me want to do the same are "Two Pina Colladas", "The Weather is Here, I Wish You Were Beautiful" and "Tin Cup Chalice". I should make a playlist of songs that make me want to move to the little latitudes. I wonder how many times I could listen to it and not drive myself to Logan and book the next flight to the tropics.
I'd come back and summer in Falmouth though.

I hate the music industry
I have been watching USA network a lot this summer (how else am I going to watch Law and Order SVU and NCIS every day?) and in the beginning of the summer they were heavily promoting the last season of Monk. In one of their ads, they had a song playing that I really liked. Tonight (a month after they stopped airing that particular ad) I finally sat down to download it off iTunes.
Ha! Joke's on me!
That particular song is only available if you buy the whole album. Every other song off that album is available as a single. The one that they know people will want to buy is not.
Apparently they have not yet figured out that people don't buy albums anymore. Yes, before the h8 mail (oh, I'm so fluent in tween) starts, I'm aware that some people DO still buy albums. But we all have to admit that the majority of music buyers now buy their music as singles. And I'm willing to buy it! Andrew could easily get it for me through some less-than-legal channels, but I do prefer to legally purchase my music. However, the powers that be have decided that I can't buy the song I want. Well, you just lost my $1.29! And I'll think twice before buying any other song from that artist!
So FYI to the music industry. People like to DOWNLOAD SINGLES. So let them do it.

#50 is an eligible receiver
So there I was, sitting on my bed, writing a mind numbingly pointless paper on made up stuff that has nothing to do with reality (okay, there I go on my tangents again) and I hear Andrew come in with the coffee. He's running around shouting like a mad man about going to the Patriots today and how my father has been trying to call and we have to go to Shaws. Um... what? I look at the clock. 11:59. Kickoff is at 1:00pm. No way in hell can we make it. Despite the fact that we live about 10 miles away from Gillette, traffic on Rt 1 on game day brings a new meaning to the word hellish. But, Andrew points out in his mad frenzy, there is no fear of Rt 1 traffic today!! These tickets are coming with a ride from my father's friend who has the special parking pass! Alrighty then, problem solved. I get up and pull some clothes on in about .09 seconds, brush my teeth, and fly out the door. About 12 minutes later we're sitting at the Shaw's parking lot in Sharon/Foxboro (somewhere around there) and about 30 seconds later my father and his friend show up. 10 minutes later, and we're in the back entrance parking lot, walking towards our seats. My father and his friend go up to the club seats; Andrew and I go to the 20th row. On the 45 yard line. And we sit down with our overpriced food just in time to watch kick off.
And we watchted the Pats trounce the Bills. It could only have been better if it was the Colts.

Childhood dreams CAN come true
I am NOT a concert person. But given the opportunity to see my first childhood celebrity crushes live and in person - I got past my aversion to concerts and jumped in line for tickets.
It.Was.Worth.It.
It's so amazing that after 15 years (really closer to 20, but they kept saying 15) so many women were willing to shell out close to $100 to see 5 middle aged guys sing manufactured pop songs from the 80's. Yeah, we were trying to reclaim a youth that is gone and never going to come back, but it was so fun, and I'm so glad I had the opportunity to do it.

la la la la la la TONIGHT!
In a little under 4 hours I will be at the Garden watching the New Kids. This is about 20 years after I thought that would happen, but no matter. I'm sure it will be worth the wait. Joey, Jordan, Jonathon, Donnie, and Danny will be singing directly to me. Clearly. And if Joey sings Please Don't Go Girl, I cannot vouch for my own actions.
On a completely different note, why is it that I can run into Sephora for 10 minutes and manage to spend $70? How does that happen? What do they put in the HVAC system in those stores?

Ol Skewl
On our way down the cape last night, DMB's crush came on to my favorite radio station ever (thank you, thank you, thank you to the person who decided to stop playing crap on 92.9 WBOS and start Radio 92.9: I might just sacrifice my first born child to you), and Andrew and I had a conversation about how much I just do not like Dave Matthews, with 2 exceptions. Other than those two, I can't stand listening to him. So Andrew asked which ones I did like, and the answer was Ants Marching and Satellite. Andrew happened to mention that he'd love to listen to Ants Marching, so I dug out The Oldest iPod Ever (seriously, I got my iPod in 2004. Black and white, tiny screen, no pictures.... you get the idea. It's the first generation iPod that had the scroll wheel) and queued it up. For the rest of the ride to the cape, I found the most random songs I could find and played them. It was kind of fun and brought back some memories! Among others, we listened to
Ants Marching, DMB
Satellite, DMB
Angel, Shaggy
Stan, Eminem
Rough Riders Anthem, DMX
Sailing Away, Styx
The General, Dispatch
Swallowed, Bush
Wild Rover, Dropkick Murphy's
Mmm, Mmm, Mmm, Crash Test Dummies
Talk abour your random list. There were a few others that I can't remember. I haven't really updated my iPod in the last year or so. I've got the major country hits that have come out, but other than that, I've been loathe to spend that dollar. I supposed I should, since sooner or later the price of an iTune is going to go up!
