Girls are about to out number boys in my household. Baby OG is a girl!!! I'm pretty excited about that. I also would have been pretty excited about a boy. However, we have a girl's name picked out and we had a difference of opinion over boys' names, so the whole "that looks like a girl....... yeah, that's a girl!" comment from the ultrasound technician was very much appreciated. We are not going to tell you what her name is until she is born, so don't bother asking.
We started looking at cribs and changing tables and the like today. I had to pick myself up off the floor after I saw prices. I still haven't quite recovered. And I still don't know how I am ever going to buy that furniture. Is it wrong to use a pack and play as a full time crib?
Well we have one answer and a million more questions now. I can see why God gave humans 9 months to get ready - I'm already going to go broke trying to afford everything, I can't imagine doing it in less than 9 months!

beginning of the end
Tomorrow is the first day of my last semester. I'm almost giddy about the fact that I only have one more class. I already handed in my graduation paperwork and paid my mandatory graduation fee (with very little complaining... aren't you proud?). All that is left is to get no less than a B in this class (though if I don't get an A in this last class, I'll be slightly heartbroken) , and receive my diploma in the mail. I'm hoping I can get my parents to pay for it to be framed for a birthday or graduation present. Then up on the wall it will go, and everyone will be required to refer to me as Meghan, MBA. 4 months and 5 days till graduation! Back in September of 2005, I never thought this day would come. But it's almost here!!!!
Late last week I discovered another "joy" of pregnancy. My hair has always been pretty low maintenance - I do have to wash it daily or else it can get kind of greasy. And if I want to wear it down, it does require some product. But on the whole, as long as it gets its daily dosing of shampoo, I don't give it much though. However, in the past 4 days, I've spent countless hours and almost $30 on it. No matter how many times I wash it, it remains greasy! I can feel it not getting clean when I shower and about an hour after I wash it, it's greasy again. I'm at my wit's end with it. I've bought 2 special shampoos for greasy hair, and neither has worked. I've already washed it twice today, and I have a burning desire to wash it again. It wouldn't matter if I did though, washing it just won't get it clean. I have managed to improve the greasiness with my new fancy Biolage shampoo for greasy hair, but it's still icky. I'm embarrassed for tomorrow night when I'll be in class - because I have no time to wash it after work and before class. My classmates are going to think I don't clean myself. I really hope this goes away, and soon.
And yet another random aside - I didn't like when NPR referred to George Bush as Mr. Bush, and I still don't like when they refer to Barack Obama as Mr. Obama. That's PRESIDENT Bush and PRESIDENT Obama to you. Have a slight amount of respect for the office of the President, thanks. I thought it would end with Bush, because NPR never had an overwhelming love for Bush, but it's continuing with Obama. I don't like it.
One last point - the New Hampshire Democrat is no longer a resident of the Granite State. He's now a fancy shmancy political operative on the Hill. Well... maybe not, but he does live and work in D.C. now. I don't know what that means for his blogging future, but hopefully he won't forget about his old friends when he's Secretary of State!

I think I might be pregnant...
This past week I started to feel the baby move. To say it's an odd sensation it to put it midly. The baby is still too small to put any real pressure on me - I can't actually feel a kick. It feels... well, it such a weird feeling, I can't even describe it. People say it feels kind of like gas, but I disagree. There is definitely something in there though.
In better news, I stopped throwing up every morning. I can't tell you how exciting that is. Other than the huge elastic band on my pants and the odd sensations I'm feeling, I'd never know I was pregnant. To be symptomless is fantastic. People tell me to take advantage of the second trimester - the fatigue, food aversions, and morning sickness is gone. I'm not yet so big that I'm uncomfortable, so I'm in a state of limbo. I actually feel like a person again!
Too bad I can't sleep on my stomach!

As usual, West Wing trumps reality
After a day full of inauguration festivities, civic pride, new beginnings, and a lot of pomp and circumstance, I came home to catch up on TV. While I was flipping around, I saw that Bravo had West Wing on.... at the wrong time. Bravo has it on in the morning, and this was 6pm. So I took a closer look and found they were replaying the Santos inauguration. Of course, I watched it - and unlike today's ceremony, it brought tears to my eyes. If only the Bartlet administration were real (and you know, Leo hadn't died...).
Yes, I did watch the inauguration and the speech - and aside from only mentioning the environment ONCE and only halfheartedly at that, I found it to be pretty good. It was definitely a speech written to a downtrodden audience, but we are a downtrodden country right now. Hopefully in 4 years when we have another inauguration, the speech will be a lot more positive. We'll see if Obama can bring about the changes he's promised.
I was impressed with Michelle Obama's wardrobe choices. She was totally channeling Jackie O. I was always impressed with Laura Bush - she dressed very well, and completely age appropriate. Nary a hair out of place on that one. But she's older than Michelle Obama and her wardrobe reflected that (and rightly so). I'm enjoying the fact that we now have a first lady who buys (some of) her clothes at J. Crew.
I did scratch my head at the colors Sasha was wearing... they might be trendy today, but those pictures are going down in history. People are going to wonder about the orange and red in a few years!

same old, same old
Some weekends take more out of me than others do. This weekend has left me exhausted and I'm facing a 5 day work week. I'm none too thrilled about that. I don't have MLK Day off - in fact I don't get a single holiday from New Years through Memorial Day. Let's have a gigantic round of applause for corporate America!
The cold snap is over - it was warm enough to snow today and we got about 6 more inches. The temperature hit 26º on our way home from NH, which is pretty much a heat wave. I didn't even bother with a jacket today!
Andrew signed up with Twitter today. I think he will like it, since it's just short blurbs. He's good at that - he can't commit to updating a blog more than once every other month, but I think if he gave it a shot on Twitter he'll find it easy to do. And he can update it on his phone. If you want to follow him, he's ajg818.

I am Not. Warm.
I haven't seen temperatures in the negatives in a year or so - I'm sure they've reached below zero at night when I'm asleep, but the past few days, we've seen negative numbers during daylight hours. I've seen as cold as -6º and as warm as about 3º in the past 36 hours. I try not to complain too much about the cold weather since it's a fact of life in New England and I do enjoy having all 4 seasons, but enough is enough. Time for some temperatures that are not only positive integers, but also double digits. I'd be happy with 10 right now.
I have a gift certificate to Circuit City, and I need to spend it soon. Any ideas on what I should buy? I went today to get a DVD player (because we've been using the xBox 360 for the past 3 years) but they didn't really have anything. Their selection is only going to decrease, so I want to find something soon - before they sell out of everything except seasons of Saved By The Bell. Everything I want is well over the $90 I have to spend, so I'll take suggestions.
Andrew just put together his mother's webcam and we Skyped with his brother. Even though that's not new technology at all, I was still impressed with it. I think the Skype menu looks like AIM did back in the day, which amuses me somewhat. I'm still not sold on having a webcam of my own, but it was cool to play around with it.
okay, I'm beyond freezing, time to go get this fire going!

naptime!
Andrew and I both had today off and we were out all day running errands. When we got home around 4, we both fell into bed for a nap. I haven't napped in a long time - it felt so good. I think every day should have a naptime built into it. I would so much more productive after work if I could sleep for an hour or two after lunch.
We're off to Keene this weekend - where it's supposed to be 1 degree. That's right. One degree. I love New England, but there are times when Key West is calling me home.

social media whore
I added my Twitter updates to my blog. If you aren't using Twitter, you should. If you went to college during AIM's heyday (aka, when I was in college and even Friendster had yet to be created, never mind Myspace and Facebook), and you were obsessive about checking away messages (and come on, who wasn't?) then Twitter is for you. And it's still for you even if you weren't an obsessive away message checker, because it's fun! Using today's current social media terminology, it's kind of like updating your facebook status, but only your followers will see the udates. If you know me, you know my Twitter screen name - so add me! I update Twitter from my phone - I have a smart phone, but even if you don't (ie, even if you don't have a phone with a full internet connection) you can still access Twitter via the web and text messages. You have to sign up online, but then you can register your phone with them and you can update via text. It's all very easy, very fun, and very addicting.

Before and After
If you've ever been to my house, you'll have noticed that it looks slightly like we live in a dorm room. We've slowly been making changes as we can, but they've been slow in coming. But we were both 24 when we bought this place, so we weren't exactly rolling in dough. One of the remaining dorm room qualities in our living room was the $20 TV stand from Walmart. It was made of plastic and particleboard and was beyond ugly:

You can see in the above photos how our TV warped the top layer of the particle board so it didn't lay flat anymore. Everything about it is ugly and you can see all the wires. I never liked it, but who had the money to fix it?
However, due to a few factors (namely a child coming in the near future, and the fact that we sold $300 worth of text books while cleaning out the future child's bedroom) we were able to finally swing an actual piece of furniture that was made of real wood. And didn't even come from Ikea!
It looks nicer in person, and if I had a better camera, I could probably take a better picture. But it looks nice, as if it were made from something that had once been a tree. Yes, that's seasons 1 - 7 of the Gilmore Girls in the top left shelf. But don't worry, the Lord of the Rings Trilogy is down there on the bottom right shelf!

shopping!
I went shopping for maternity pants today - I was down to 1 pair of pants that I could wear to work comfortably, and another one that I could wear with my Bella Band. And my jeans were starting to get too tight. So off to the Burlington Mall I went. $80 later I had 2 pairs of work pants, 1 pair of jeans, and a shirt. Not bad. I now have 3 pairs of maternity pants to wear to work. I'd love to not spend a ton more on work clothes, but I can't look like a homeless person when I'm working.
Of course, then I had to go to Sephora. But, shockingly, I only bought a replacement for the eyeshadow brush I lost. Though to make up for that, I proceeded to buy a new pairs of shoes at Marshall's!
So it was a good shopping day for me, and now I can wear clothes that fit. Well, at least I can wear pants that fit, I'm still working on shirts. And then I had to do this all again in the spring... Being pregnant is not cheap!
Time to batten down the hatches for the 6 - 10 inches of snow we're getting tonight.

tired
6:20 comes quickly. I feel like I have just closed my eyes when the damn buzzer is going off. The first time it does, at 6:20, I usually hit snooze with no recollection of doing so. I'm normally surprised when it goes off at 6:29. Then I hit snooze again, because everyone should get one snooze after all, and all of the sudden it is 6:38 and I'm late. During normal traffic times (ie not Christmas or summer) I have to leave my house by 7, or I will never make it to work on time. Therefore, getting out of bed at 6:38 leaves me 22 minutes to get out of the house. It hardly ever happens. I've been known to hit snooze after 6:38 and fall back asleep till 6:47. That turns me into full fledged Panic Girl, because while I try to shower at night, sometimes I have to do it in the morning. And I have 13 minutes to get out of the house.
I've tried everything. I've tried to go to bed earlier, but that does not help me get up any earlier. I've tried setting my alarm earlier, but sometimes I'll just turn it off in my sleep, not hit snooze. Yesterday I ironed my clothes for the week and divided up my pasta into lunch sized portions so that would already be done in the morning. But I will still late this morning. It's not normal to have to be at work at 7:30 in the morning. It's too damn early!

Open Letter
Dear The Vatican
Thank you for still making me laugh at your expense. It's been a while. You're so silly!

thrilling
We've heard countless times over the past 15 weeks that our lives are going to change when the baby comes, blah blah blah. That was news to me, I thought I could just stick the baby in a drawer when I got bored. Silly me. So while, yes, I am fully aware my life will change, so you can stop telling me about it - I wasn't quite aware of how much of an undertaking getting READY for the baby would be. We have barely scratched the surface of what we need to do and I am already overwhelmed.
The bedroom that will become a nursery is already fully furnished with non nursery things. And it's been our catch all dumping ground for 33 months. Before we can pack everything up and throw away the furniture we have in here (anyone want any of it?) we have to clean it all out. We started that adventure yesterday. We cleaned out the desk and shelves, put all our text books on Amazon (at great deals!), cleaned out and re-organized the filing cabinet, and cleaned out my closet. This morning I have literally a quarter of the clothes in my closet that I did yesterday morning. I donated a bag to charity, threw away a bag, put away some things will won't fit until after the pregnancy and stored the rest of my summer things. All of that took over 3 hours. We need to finish cleaning out the room next weekend. How exciting is the life we lead?
Oh, and today we get to look for new TV stand and bookshelves. My weekends are already revolving around my unborn child and I'm not even showing yet.

new year; new look
Some changes to the blog for the new year. I was getting a little sick of the old version. I really wish Blogger gave some more choices for a template, but I suppose you have to take what you get to some extent, considering this is a free platform.
The changes are pretty obvious. Unfortunately my ticker had to be deleted because I couldn't fit it anywhere else. So you won't have a daily reminder of when I graduate, but it's not that far away. May 29th - remember that date, and not just because it's MY BIRTHDAY!! This year it's also my graduation day! I won't be walking at my ceremony, as I will be about 36 weeks pregnant at that point and graduation ceremonies at huge universities are not quick and conducive to women who are 36 weeks pregnancy. So I won't be celebrating with my fellow graduates, and I won't have the vat of margaritas I wanted to have, but I'll be celebrating in my own pregnant way!
Also obvious - I added a photo to the top of the blog. I'm going to change them monthly and hopefully they will reflect something about the current month. If you are paying attention, you'll know I took the current photo in December, but hey, it snows in January too. I have a feeling the February photo may include snow. And this will force me to take some nicer pictures. Although my camera is a piece of junk, so you will have to put up with what I can manage to get that camera to produce.
So what are your New Years resolutions? I have 2: to drink more water (I am terrible with getting enough water) and to try to put a little more of an effort in my appearance at work. I'm so tired at 6:20 in the morning, that all I manage is to make sure my pants and top match and are reasonably not-wrinkled. And the last part only happens because Andrew irons my clothes for me. I need to try a little harder, if only for my own sake. I just feel fat at this point - if you didn't know I was pregnant, you would never guess I was. I'm not showing yet, but I'm gaining weight everywhere (some may tell you that means I'm carrying a girl) and I don't feel pretty. So those are my goals for 2009. Except I'm giving myself a reprieve from the second one when I go back to work in September - I don't have any delusions of being pretty at work after sleepless nights. Although maybe we'll win the lottery between now and then and I won't have to go back to work at all!
