the taste of her cherry chapstick

I've been watching West Wing season 4 every spare second I have since last Saturday. It's bittersweet for me. Season 4 is The Great Sam Seaborn Departure. And when he leaves, he isn't to been seen again until Josh goes to collect him again in the last episode. That's just a tragedy. At least this isn't The Unbelievable Toby Ziegler Falling From Grace Season. We still have a solid two seasons until Toby goes criz-nazy.

Alright, well seeing as most people don't have the love of West Wing that I do, you're probably pretty bored by now. We'll switch topics - but I reserve the right to wax poetical about Josh Lyman at any time I see fit.

But now I will pose the question - where did July go? I know summers fly by, but for some reason I feel like this is the fastest summer I have ever had. Tomorrow is August 1st. I can't quite comprehend that. The only good part of summer moving quickly is that every day that passes is one day closer my graduation. (9 months and 4 weeks!) But we still have a month before it's all over, so I guess I will just enjoy it as long as I can!

oh how the mighty have fallen

As I type this, I'm looking around at my parent's living room down the cape. (If you are reading this and you are not from New England and you think there is a word missing in the phrase "down the cape", there isn't. Nor is it missing from "down cellar" or "up Maine", which is actually supposed said "down Maine"). And there are a few things in this living room that people would be astounded to see. People that know my parents, that is.

Over in the corner is a pale yellow and green chair that rocks back and forth and side to side. It lives in the corner of the room, and never get puts away. That was purchased after a 2 hour trip to Babies R Us. Because heaven forbid their grandchild not have the absolute best chair that is out there. Molly seems to like it, she's been sitting it at my parent's house since she was born.

On one of the end tables is a green frog toy and Good Night Cape Cod. They never get put on the stairs to be put away and it's okay to them to be next to the uber fragile starfish. Shocking, I know.

Closer to my seat is the 360ยบ of fun, otherwise known as an exisaucer. That contains all the primary colors. About 5 million times each. And it plays the same song over and over. It somewhat clashes with the muted pastel color scheme going on, and it doesn't quite match the nautical theme in the room. But yet it's probably the most well loved article of furniture in the entire house. Clashing colors and all

A little bit out my sight, out on the deck, there sits a high chair. ON THE DECK!!!! Other chairs get moved to not disturb the high chair and have it be in the optimal position.

I never though I would see the day that my father walked around the house pointing out all the flowers, while catering to a 6 month old's love for all things red.

If only grandchildren knew the power they wield.

All things considered

I paid $3.97 for gas today. I was unbelievably excited. I even did a little happy dance to myself as I was filling up in the pouring rain. Then I got home and Andrew told me he saw it for $3.95.
Foiled again!

I joined a gym today. Which means tomorrow I have to go to the gym. Which means I have to pack a gym bag so I can go after work. I already don't want to go and I haven't gone yet.

I heard a man on NPR today saying how he can't afford his mortgage on his 5 bedroom, 3.5 bath, 2car garage. Maybe he shouldn't have bought a 5 bedroom, 3.5 bath, 2 car garage house! While I do feel for the people who are really in over their heads on the mortgages, I have no pity for the people who bought way too much house. Having a house is a privilege, not a right.

I wish I could bike to work, but that would require biking either on Rt 138 or Rt 37. Neither one are bike friendly. In fact, there's a huge possibility I could die if I did bike there. But still, I wish there was a way.

boredom and other such things

Did you ever take a nap out of sheer boredom? Yesterday we tried and tried and tried to find something to do, but the weather was just not cooperating. After breakfast, Andrew and I went to hit a bucket of balls, but it was so hot and so muggy that neither one of us even wanted to finish. (and in my case, it didn't help that there was a 4 year old who was hitting the balls better than I was). After that there was just Nothing. To. Do. It was extremely hot and muggy, but also overcast and very windy. Basically it was too hot to do anything outside except for the beach, and that was out due to the wind. Unless you like sand pelted at your face. By midafternoon I ran out of all options except go to bed. So I did. The window AC was on and I curled up under the covers for an hour. I didn't sleep though - I almost never actually fall asleep when I nap, but I still loved every second of it.

Last night I watched Ghost Busters on Hulu, Are you watching things on Hulu? Because you should be. For those of you who are unaware of its fantastic-ness, it is a joint venture between NBC and Fox. They have full length television shows and movies, along with excerpts of many more. Of course, the selections for the full length movies are not as wide as one would like, but there are still options. Last night it was perfect because the one television in the house was being used, and I didn't feel like reading another page of a book (I've done a lot of that this weekend). So I hopped on hulu from bed (if you don't have wireless, you probably won't like hulu so much) and watched the original Ghost Busters in all its early 80's glory. When you've been from one side of the internet to the other and back and you still are looking for something to do, try it.

sad

Due to some very classless anonymous comments left here lately, I'm now moderating all comments before they can be posted.

I'm still encouraging comments though! Comment away! I want to see comments! Even if you disagree with what I say, I'll still let the comment through. Just be slightly intelligent in what you say and don't resort to name calling.

I miss Mayberry

Today, in the 90 degree heat, I loaded up my car with 3 months worth of bottles and cans to return. Seeing as I live on the 3rd floor, this is not easy to do by myself. I had to lug 9 packages of diet coke, and a whole lot more 6 packs and 12 packs of beer (and no, we did not drink all the beer ourselves, we do have friends, thank you very much) down 3 flights of stairs and load them into my car.

But, we're putting that money aside for our DC trip at the end of the summer (which was supposed to be a Cali trip, but unfortunately that did not work out this summer... fingers crossed for next year...) so we can afford to take the metro all week. (please correct me if I'm wrong about the DC subway system being called the metro). Anyway, back to the original story - I finally get to Sketchville, USA - otherwise known as Pleasant Street in Brockton to return them. I pull up and see large signs all over the place: "Glass bottles - 4 cents". Um.... I paid a 5 cent deposit on my glass bottles, I want 5 cents back. So I was really annoyed at that - how can they only give you 4 cents back on your deposit? The fuck? So I took out my diet coke packages and brought them into the place. At least I could salvage something from my trip, right? Wrong. I walk in and wait for a few minutes for someone to deign to help me and some short dude finally walks over to me and tells me he won't take them back. This is the following conversation:

"you have a lot we don't take"
"you don't take diet coke?"
"no deposit"
"there's no deposit on diet coke"
"no deposit"

I looked around dumbfounded at the 3 other people returning diet coke cans. I looked back at Short Dude and stared at him. He finally relented and said he would take the diet coke, but the lemonade doesn't have a deposit. Okay, that's fine. Our mistake for the lemonade, I never actually gave any thought to whether or not I paid a deposit on them. But Short Dude was just annoyed at me because I had a car full of glass bottles that I was not going to return for 4 cents. He heard me talking to Andrew on the phone about it, and I guess he was mad that I would go somewhere else to return my glass, but I was going to return the Diet Coke to him. After he agreed to take the DC back, I told him I'd find somewhere else to go for everything.

Honestly - what is up with the 4 cents? People pay a 5 cent deposit on their beer bottles, therefore when they return them, they deserve 5 cents back. People that take 4 cents are crazy. I know it's a penny and it's not much. But I already PAID that penny, now I want it back! I upheld my part of the bargain, I paid my 5 cent deposit. Now I want my nickle back, dammit!

And to be rude to someone who isn't willing to get 4 cents back when she deserves 5 cents back is terrible customer service. I don't like to give business with no customer service my business.

On a better note, I did find a big liquor store on my way home that took everything back and I put $10.15 towards the DC trip. At least one of us will be able to get around while we are down there!!

do my eyes deceive me?

A few days ago I was driving to meet Andrew at work and I happened to be stopped at a red light. Two motorcycles were next to me. I don't claim to know a lot about motorcycles, but my driving instructor way back in the day had one and he taught us some basic safety techniques about them. The first being what to wear on a motorcycle. He strongly emphasized leather jackets, full pants, boots, and a full helmet. Then he described what road rash is and how painful it can be. All of what he said made complete sense to me, and if I ever have the chance to be on a motorcycle, I will probably heed his words of wisdom. I might not don the leather in the heat of the summer, but you can bet your booty that I would have pants and some sort of long sleeved shirt on. With nice, sturdy footwear.

Most motorcyclers I have seen have a good amount of protective gear on. Sure you see the guys with the helmet that is barely there and will do nothing to protect the brain should the wearer get into an accident, and the T-shirt and shorts guys, but in general I think people are pretty smart about it.

Then I saw the girl on the motorcycle next to me. Had I not been belted onto it, I would have fallen out of my seat.

She had the barely there helmet on. From that point down, it got worse.

Picture the scene: a spaghetti strap sundress. That did NOT cover her legs while she was sitting on the motorcycle. (she was a passenger). I know what color underoos she was wearing that day. Cheap plastic-looking flip flops. And that is it for clothing.

You might be shocked to read this part..... she was texting. On the back of a motorcycle. As it was moving.

Some people do not use the brains God gave them. Some people are dumber than that. She falls into the second category.

We are a House Divided

While I fully reserve to change my mind at any time from now until the second I walk into the voting booth, I've decided to back Obama. See the right side of the blog.

Do I have misgivings? Yes, I do. By no means is Obama perfect, but I do believe that he's a better choice than McCain.

Andrew is quite unhappy with my decision, but he'll have to deal. Though it's only July, who knows how things will actually turn out.

(and yes, I am well aware that Together We Can was Patrick. That's the joke)
I was sitting in class tonight thinking about all the reasons I hate UMass. Then I realized that my long suffering readers have been forced to hear all about my hatred for the school and I very rarely list the reasons why. So here you go, long suffering readers. The reasons why UMB is terrible.

1. I have gone to school there for 3 years. Not once have I been in a room that contained a white board. Now I know that's not really a reason to hate a school. But it just shows how ass backwards the school truly is.

2. One word. Wireless. We have 6 buildings on campus. One building is wireless. The remaining 5? Well if you're lucky, there might be a "zone" in your building. Then again, there might not be one at all.

3. I cannot get a library card because I can't get to the student services office in normal business hours. Why? Right, because I work normal business hours. I use the Brandeis bookstore instead. I shouldn't have to do that.

4. Fees. Oh my god in heaven, the incessant fees. They actually have a fee that they ADMIT is there to make up the difference between what we pay in tuition and what other universities would charge. THE FUCK!?!?!?!?!? Just charge it all as tuition and stop lying. Honestly. Who cares what your tuition is if your fees are triple the tuition.

5. Parking.... this is a topic I have covered in the past. To rehash: UMB is a commuter school that is a series of building built over parking garages. In the summer of 06 the closed the parking garages forever, never open again. I'll say that again. THEY CLOSED THE PARKING GARAGES AT A COMMUTER SCHOOL. The reason? They were structurally unsafe. But don't worry, they insist the buildings on top of the garages are fine. Apparently they will just float in the air when the garages that are supporting them crumble away. Leviosa!!!

There are more reasons, but my language is getting away from me, as it is want to do when I'm livid. So I'll end this now and fantasize I am back in the SAC.

Random ramblings

Summers are obviously different now than when I was a kid. Which means a lot of things, but most important to me is the weekends are that much more precious. To me a rainy weekend is God cheating me out one of the 10 weekends of summer - which isn't very nice. Thankfully there hasn't really been a rainy weekend, or more aptly put, there hasn't been a weekend that hasn't been, in some way, salvageable. For which I am supremely grateful.

However, all the summer fun crammed into one weekend instead of one week is extremely tiring. After yesterday's Big Day, I fell into bed around 9:30 and woke up at 8:00 this morning. That is a LOT of sleep. Usually during the week I'm in bed at the earliest at 10:30 and crawl out of bed at 6:20 - to me, that is not nearly enough sleep. Usually I can manage to stay up past 9:30, but I was out in the sun practically all day yesterday (covered in sunblock and I still have a red face!) and it just took everything I had out of me.

In other news, my second summer session starts up tomorrow. Which means the summer is already halfway over! Boooooo!!!! But at the time of publication, I have 10 months, 2 weeks, and 2 days left of school. I CAN get through that, and by the time I do, it will be summer again!

Did this post have a point? I can't tell - I sat down to write about a woman I saw on a motorcycle, but I think that will be a later post.

Mount Canton

Andrew wanted to take the bikes home this week just to try having them in Canton. Personally, I don't think they will get much use here, but I'm certainly willing to see how it goes. Today I had 3 library books to return and I had a bike sitting in my kitchen. So I put the two together - and it was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be. It's about a 2.5 mile ride, which is nothing on a bike, but when it's 90 degrees and humid outside, it can be a lot. And apparently the slight incline on Sherman Street was built up to a mountain overnight.

When I got to the library, I was so hot and sweaty it was embarrassing to walk around. I grabbed two books as fast as I could and got back on the bike and headed home. That's when I realized we have a mountain in Canton. And not Blue Hills.

I did really enjoy the bike ride, though I didn't enjoy carrying it up 3 flights of stairs after a hot ride on such a muggy day. I don't know if I will keep my bike here during the week, but I realized I do miss having my bike around. We'll see how much I use it the rest of the week.

week 5

Week 5 ladies and gentlemen. Week 5.

This week it was Ernie's memorial service.

Did that really just happen?

I am going to need a vacation from this mini vacation I've been on.

On Wednesday, Andrew took a final, came back to Canton and we packed up for our long weekend. We then drove to Quincy so Andrew could finish working and finally headed to the cape around 11pm. Thursday we did our thing and drove back up to Stoughton for Party #1. Then we went back down the cape and took part in Party #2, aka the Fourth of July. On Saturday morning we woke up, drove 3 hours north to Party #3 in Keene. Then took a tour of southwestern NH picking up the sad forgotten Shaheen signs. Took a break at Texas Roadhouse and then headed back to Falmouth. I woke up at 5am this morning and did my presentation. Tomorrow I will drive from Falmouth to Boston for my last class, and finally end up at home.

Now I want a vacation!

Worst. Movie. Ever.

I am watching a movie so terrible that I can't even turn it off. It truly might be the worst movie I have ever seen. It's called The Last Married Couple In America. Circa 1980. I'm pretty sure my 5 month old niece could have written better dialogue. I'm also reasonably certain that my mother's cat could do better acting. It's actually a miracle the that the movie industry survived after this release.

Plot: Mari and Jeff's friends are getting divorced.
Plot Twist: Mari and Jeff's friends are getting divorced
Character Development: Mari is married to Jeff. Her friends are getting divorced.
Jeff is married to Mari. His friends are getting divorced.
Random Quote: Hello Boys!!!
Hello Dad!!!
Where's Mom????
She's next door with the Squibs!!!! She said you should go!!!!
Okay, I will!!!!!

Seriously. The entire movie is full of exclamation marks that aren't necessary. And instead of acting and portraying emotion through delivering lines, body language, etc., they just tell. Mad? YELL! Sad? YELL! Happy? YELL! Confused? YELL!

Maybe I shouldn't be surprised that this was a free movie On Demand.

update

Week 4 of Meghan crying at Army Wives.

why is it...

Why is it that short weeks are so long? And tomorrow is going to be the longest day of the week. And I still have to do research and create a presentation by next Monday. Tomorrow I have 3 meetings, an arbitration memo to write and send out, plus all my new work that I will get. Then I have to go home and finish a paper and email it to my professor. I know I shouldn't complain. I know. I know I've got good things going for me, but when I'm so busy with work and stressed out with school, it's hard to find time to enjoy what I have. I'm trying to remain positive - hell I have less than 11 months left with school. Next summer I will have so much more time to enjoy myself and my free time. But that doesn't make this summer any easier!!

Speaking of summer, I can't believe it's the 4th of July already. If I blink now I might miss the rest of the summer. I'll just invest in a lot of Visine and have a blinkless summer.

No, I have to concentrate on the glass being half full. Which means it's July 1, I have two more months of summer, I have a 5 day weekend ahead of me, I have a whole week off in the end of August, and most importantly..... I have an air conditioner!!!!

Glass: Half Full
