As an American whose ancestors came from Ireland (many generations ago) I feel completely justified in explaining something to everyone.
When someone says "top of the morning to you", there is actually a proper response to it. That response is: "and the rest of the day to yourself".
Got it?
I said so, and I would know because I'm reasonably certain my great great grandparents were born in Ireland. Actually on my father's side my great grandparents were born there, so I'm practically an Irish citizen. Actually, my father IS an Irish citizen. He's been to the country all of one time. But he's been to "the farm", which, had my great grandfather not emigrated to the US and in fact had stayed in Ireland, would have been his. I think. I'm not 100% sure of that story. And to be honest, I really think something to do with someone being kicked in the head with a horse is part of the story. Not even making that part up.

All I know is that my dad used to call his sister every Sunday morning and practically yell "top o' the mornin' to ya my dear!". Growing up, I never knew that there was a response to that. Then again, maybe my aunt didn't either... I guess we'll never know.
