Every day on my way home I pass Crowell's Market, which sells both liquor and food. I really needed pasta sauce, as I didn't have any this morning when I went to dump it in the crockpot. But as I was approaching it, I admitted to myself the chances were very great I would walk out with a nice bottle of pinot noir. And while I very much wanted some vino to ease the stress of the week, I didn't really need it. As I couldn't trust myself to come out only with pasta sauce, I went home and made do with what I had (not very much). That got me thinking, as I was rolling my turkey meatballs together (I've got to put more flour in those things, they don't stay in a ball at all) about the difference between want and need.
I wanted wine, but I was good enough to realize I didn't need it.
I want a tropical vacation on some Carribean Island. I need some quiet R&R time, though not necessarily on a beach.
I want a Lexus RX 400 hybrid. I don't need a new car.
I want a new shirt to wear when I go out. I need work pants
I want a house. I don't need anything more than my condo.
I want to go back in time and buy stock of Bershire Hathaway. I need to go back in time and buy stock of Berkshire Hathaway

update
I'm linking 2 more blogs. The first is Bree's non LOST blog, Musings of a Military Wife. The title speaks for itself and nary a grammatical error to be found! The second is, in my opinion, a good blog on eco-friendly topics called Fig and Sage. Some of it is a little much for me, but I think they have some good ideas. I've tried to find a non-preachy eco-friendly blog that actually has feasible ideas for every-day people. You know, like ratifying Kyoto agreement.
Think about it
Being green is trendy right now. Which I think is a good thing, at least people are waking up to the fact that maybe the earth does need some protection, lest it be destroyed by the people who take so much from it. But I am a little concerned about the people who are so eager to be seen as green that they are doing more damage than they are helping to fix.
Andrew and I were passing some time before Numb3rs came on Friday night, so we watched Greenovate on On Demand. Greenovate is a show about people making green revovations to their home. One of them looked semi-interesting so we put it on. And the couple on the show left me scratching my head.
They had some good ideas - they wanted energy star rated appliances, wanted a newer HVAC system to use less electricity, things like that. But as any true green person will tell you, creating more waste goes against the very basic priciples of living a greener lifestyle.
They hired an interior designer who specializes in organic household items. One of the suggestions she had was to spend a LOT of money on a new organic mattress and bedframe. But.... nothing was wrong with their old mattress and frame. They didn't NEED a new mattress. Maybe when they need a new mattress they could look into the spiffy organic one. But they just created more waste by throwing away a perfectly good mattress. And they were re-tiling their shower with some cool looking pebbles from some river.... maybe the Nile. But anyway, they liked the tiles so much, they ripped up the tiles in front of the fireplace to re-tile that. The problem? They never intended on re-tiling that area and it didn't need to be re-tiled. So they ripped up perfectly good tiles and threw them away. For what? Because they liked the look of the new tile.
I know people redecorate every single day and throw things away that don't need to be thrown away. But to do it in the name of being green is ridiculous. Being wasteful isn't being green.

quick update
Unfortunately, the BSC blogger has stopped blogging, so she must be purged from my site. Any good ideas on a replacement?
Flextastic
I heart my flex days!
Except I have a doctors appointment in two hours. Yech - but then I am heading off to Quincy to rollerblade! And do laundry.. but mostly to rollerblade. :) Andrew told me not to strain myself too much on my day off, so I am going to take that advice to heart. I do have to take out the recycling when I leave though. That's a lot more energy than I want to put into anything today. But it's overflowing, so it's really time.
Picture time!
Me and Andrew at the beginning of the Cliff Walk in Newport. See how flat and nice it is? Yeah, it doesn't stay like that!
Me in the middle of the Cliff Walk. See my pasty white skin? By the end of the day, the skin was no longer pasty white. Lobster red would be a better description. Who gets sunburned in April?

This is near the end. It doesn't look as hard as it is in the these pictures. Let me tell you, rock scaling is not a talent of mine.

Letter
Dear Josh Twohig '03 (Class President)
First of all, stop addressing things to me as "Mrs. Andrew Lastname". Not only did I retain my maiden name, when I got marred, but I also did not eliminate my first name. I'm more than willing to graciously accept correspondence addressed to Mrs. Meghan Marriedname. But Mrs. Andrew? Nope. Not going to do with any sort of grace. By the way - 1945 called. They miss you want want you to come home. They have some poor unmarried women who are about to throw themselves off a bridge unless you come rescue them. Maybe one day on of them can be Mrs. Josh Twohig.
Now, on to more important matters. I consider myself lucky to have received the very special "you already give to St. A's, now give more for the reunion letter". I do give an annual gift, and I will continue to do so. But you want me to give $500. Are you kidding me? $500? I wasn't aware I had a spare $500 lying around. Did you not notice by the amount of last years annual gift that I don't have a ton of money to give out? And I have to give to my high school too. So any money I have to give to educational institutes must be split in half. Sorry - you're not getting your $500.
So in conclusion, don't try to guilt me into giving $500. If I had it, I would give it. I don't have it. And you're annoying me.

It's not easy being green
It's 6:44am. On a Saturday. And I have been awake for about an hour now. Sometimes I hate my life.
Anyway, in the words of a wise frog, It's not easy being green. And he's right - it really isn't easy being green these days - mainly because we hear differing point of views as to what is good for us and good for the environment. And these opinions can change daily. One day your Nalgene bottle is saving the earth and keeping plastic bottles from sitting in landfills, the next day it's giving you cancer.
I think we can all agree, we must start taking better care of the earth. We need to depend on non-renewable resources less, we need to save open space for our children to enjoy, we need clean air, clean water, and clean everything in between. Pushing the global warming issue aside, we still need all these things.
So I try to do my part. I use my re-usable grocery bags (I LOVE them!); to my husbands great frustration, I unplug appliances when not in use ; I recycle as much as I can; I drive a fuel efficient car; I even eat organic as much as I can, because god only knows what kind of chemicals I am putting into my body when I don't. My next quest is to get one of those small bags in a pouch that you can put on your keychain, and when you are just running into a store for a few small things you can put it all in your handy little bag and not take a plastic bag. I MUST find one.
In a few years I will need to buy at least one bigger car. I'm hoping to drive my Carolla into the ground and have it for a long time, so it will be the Sentra we are replacing. But what kind of car should I get? I need a little bit more room than a Carolla or Sentra can give me. But bigger cars have bigger gas needs which lead to more emissions... What's a Green Girl to do? (besides getting out of her in traffic and bashing in the windows of the hummer that's idling in traffic in front of her... I hate Hummers)
I found a site called greenercars.org (and no, I do not accept money to blog about specific things, so rest assured, NO ONE is paying me for any posts I write, positive or negative. I have little respect for people who post for money). It's a fun site to play around with and will probably make my next car purchase a little easier. Among many things, they have lots of lists. (I love lists. I love to make them. I love to read them.) These lists break the most useful of said lists down like as follows:
* Best Vehicles by Class
* Greenest Vehicles of 2008
* Meanest Vehicles for the Environment in 2008
I was happy to see that my beloved Carolla is the 7th greenest vehicle of 2008, with a green score of 45**. In comparison, the greenest car of the year is the Honda Civic, with a green score of 57. I was actually surprise to see that the Meanest vehicle was the Volkswagon Touareg, with a green score of 14. (**If you want to see how they come up with the scores, scroll to the bottom of this post, where I have copy and pasted it. Or go play on the site!).
I went into the Best Vehicle by Class to see how the Compact SUV's stand up. The best one is the Ford Escape Hybrid non 4wd with a green score of 42. However, I do want 4wd. I will probably only use it 3 or 4 days a year, but I want the option. So the best one with 4wd.... The Ford Escape Hybrid, with 4wd, with a green score of 40!! Obviously, these are the 4 cylinders, but I'm looking for space, not power.
So what that site is telling me, when the time comes, I can get a small SUV with rooms for skis, bags for our constant travels throughout NE to see family, possibly car seats and have a green score of only 5 less than my Carolla. Sweet. Hopefully in a few more years there will be some used (I'm sorry, certified pre-owned) ones lying about, or perhaps there'll be more small SUV's from which to choose!
** From greenercars.org: We analyze automakers' test results for fuel economy and emissions as reported to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board, along with other specifications reported by automakers. We estimate pollution from vehicle manufacturing, from the production and distribution of fuel and from vehicle tailpipes. We count air pollution, such as fine particles, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons and other pollutants according to the health problems caused by each pollutant. We then factor in greenhouse gases (such as carbon dioxide) and combine the emissions estimates into a Green Score that runs on a scale from 0 to 100. The top vehicles this year score a 57, the average is 30 and the worst gas-guzzlers score around 14.

She's just being Miley...
I just bought a Miley Cirus song on iTunes. And I'm not ashamed to admit it. I st-st-stutted when you asked me what I'm thinkin' 'bout.
What a day. Did you ever just have the day from absolute hell? That was today. My father used to say he wanted to be a bus driver so at the end of the day he could park his bus in the bus barn and go home and not think about anything until he had to go back to work. I firmly echo that belief. I'm at home, but I'm still stressed out about work and the issues I will face when I go back tomorrow morning. I want to do data entry. There's zero stress in data entry. I hate working. I hate that I have to work. I hate getting up early to go to work. I hate worrying about work at home. I hate it all. I hate having huge huge issues that have to be dealt with. We are going to Newport this weekend, and I can't wait. I can't wait to just get away from it all, even if we will only be gone for 24 hours! Weather permitting, we are going to try to do all of the Cliff Walk, so hopefully I will have some good pictures!
So what else is new... The Masters were this past weekend. Tiger managed to scrape by at second with a -5. He needs an attitude readjustment. No need to be a whiney bitch, Tiger. You can't win everything. Maybe if every single news outlet didn't hype the fact that Tiger might win all 4 Majors this year he would have been less stressed Why don't you let him win 1 Major first? Anyway, he didn't win the Masters, so he can't win all 4 Majors, and we'll commence the same discussion next year.
So who did win? Trevor Immelman with a -8. (My father was pissed about that - he wanted to Tiger to win. He kept telling Trevor to miss and sending jedi-like vibes... but to no avail. Funny because his father always called Tiger a flash in the pan). Mr. Immelman is from South Africa (and is quite handsome, by the way) and has beat cancer, married his childhood sweetheart, and withdrew from the South African Airways Open to be with his wife for the birth of his first child (hello, Tom? Yeah - you're a shmuck). He's pretty much a saint. At least for now - I wonder how often we will hear his name from now on.

huh
no one reads my blog. It's official.
The Masters haven't yet started people! How can there be a score yet?

bargain
Last week when Andrew was going on and on about the Broonz, I made a bargain with him. I will talk to him about soccer and golf whenever he wants to. But he isn't allowed to mention the Red Sox or Bruins or Celtics in my presence. He actually has to pretend they don't exist if I am around. We made a deal last year that they can only be on the big TV if there is no previously scheduled television show on. (previously scheduled meaning something that either I or we watch with regularity). So I have to keep up my end of the bargain.
Soccer: So far the Revs are doing okay - they've only played two games. They beat Houston 3-0 and lost to Chicago 4-0. Taylor Twellman couldn't play in the Chicago game because he had to have arthroscopy on his knee. He's expected to miss the next 6 weeks, so we'll see how well the team does without him. I can't watch on Wednesday when they play KC at 8pm because I have class. So you should watch it. More people should watch MLS. Wednesday's game is on TV 38.
Golf: Masters is going on right now. As of publishing, the current leader is Zach Johnson - aka the winner of the 2007 Masters. Tiger is tied for 2nd at +3. We'll get more into the Masters this weekend.
So in order for me to hold myself up to my end of the bargain (so I can make Andrew shut the eff up when he starts talking about the Other Boston Sports Teams) I need to keep myself up to date. Therefore, you - my adoring fans - will be kept up to date as well

NKOTB, part II
I knew New Kids were coming back. I was intrigued by the idea. After all, I loved them as a kid. Who doesn't want to relive memories like that? I figured it would be fun, the radio stations would play a few songs, and they'd play out at Worcester Centrum and it'd be over.
For the most part, that plan is sill true. What I didn't know is how freaking excited I would be. I didn't realize that I would scream out loud and almost run a red light on my way to work, just because I happened to hear Matty in the Morning announce that they were coming to Kiss Concert. I didn't know I would leave work 5 minutes early to go out to my car to listen to their in-studio interview. I never thought I'd be trying to figure out how to get down to NYC on May 16th. I didn't even know that I still had every single song memorized.
Once obsessed, always obsessed I guess.
Truth be told, I am almost too young to be such a New Kids fan. Please Don't Go Girl was released as a single in spring 1988. Spring 1998, I was just about to turn 7. I was in first grade. I was trying desperately to sound out the big words, or else I would be dropped from the smart reading group. I wasn't listening to teeny bopper music. The album, Hanging Tough was release in September 1988. I was 7. I was starting second grade. I had to start to learn actual subjects in school - what did I care about 5 teenage boys (and when I was 7, teenage boys were the worst kind of creature in existence) from Boston were doing? Especially at that age - I was truly too young to fall victim to Joey Mac's positively dreamy blue eyes. But somehow I fell under their spell.
As a little girl with an older brother I was well schooled in Star Wars, World War II, GI Joe, and other boy interests. Yeah, I had my dolls and Barbies that I played with. I didn't scorn all girly things. I played hockey and baseball, but I also figure skated. I was a girl with girl interests. But let's face it. When I wanted to watch Annie and my 10 year old brother wanted to watch Return of the Jedi, who do you think won? When I wanted to color and my brother wanted to play mini-hockey, guess what we did? You get the idea. But the The New Kids were a phenomenon that somehow managed to penetrate they boy-centric early childhood that I had. All the girls in entire school loved them. I remember walking to a store with my older cousins and soaking up every tidbit of information they had the boys. I listened to my Hanging Tough tape on almost a daily basis. I had buttons. I had sheets. I had posters. New Kids 4Eva.
I still know all the songs. I still know Joey's the cute one, Danny's the ugly one, and Donnie's the bad one. Jordan and Jon are just there. I know I never got to a concert as a kid. And I also that if given the opportunity, I will get to a concert as an adult.
Please don't go girl!
It would ruin my whole world
Tell me you'll stay!
Never ever go away...

howdy ho!
Gosh darn it, I have been busy. And rather grumpy, if you couldn't tell.
Good news? Not so grumpy anymore.
Bad news? Just as busy.
Though aside from Andrew having to work on Saturday, we are pretty free this weekend. We haven't really seen much of each other lately, so I'm working some sort of date night. I don't know if it will happen though. Between crazy work schedules, school work for both of us, trainwrecks (literally), countless errands, taxes, etc. etc. etc., I haven't really had time to sit down and blog. And now that I have a minute, I really have nothing to say.
I will say that I am so ready for Spring. I wore a skirt and a (really cute, if I do say so myself) pink shirt to work today in protest of the winter weather we've been having. My mother is bringing home my rollerblades from the cape this weekend, so hopefully sometime soon I'll get out of the house. I'm confident that warmer weather might actually be a reality at some point this year.
