Motown Philly's back again....
Oh wait. Wrong Boys II Men song. My bad.
I've been thinking a lot lately about the end of summer and the super quick transition into fall. I was floating around in my grandmother's pool yesterday staring at the sky, which was a deep dark blue. You know - the kind of blue you'll never see in June, July, and the beginning of August. It's the dark dark blue of fall. Even though yesterday was sunny without a cloud in sight, there were hints that it will all be over soon. The trees down the cape are predominately oak, and they turn a certain shade of green right at summer's end. It's a darker green than normal and set against the fall-blue sky, it's a giveaway that next week summer is over and fall is here. The past couple of days the wind has had an undercurrent of what it going to come. Last Friday I was sitting out in my parents yard and it was hot. I had a bathing suit on and was trying to motivate myself to walk to my grandmother's house to swim and the breezes started. Not uncommon on the cape, but it was the fact that there is a subtle chill in the breeze, even when it's 80 degrees out. This wasn't the cool breeze that everyone wants, nor was it carrying the salty air that can instantly lift my spirits. No, it was just a different breeze, the kind that makes you zip up your light coat and begin to wonder if you should bring your winter coats to the cleaner before you have to wear them. The cicadas are back too. Not all cicadas do that whole 7 or 14 year thing, there are some every year. And they make a distinct high pitched whine which translates into "it's extremely hot right now, but soon you'll be sitting in a classroom starting our the window, trying to figure out how you blinked and summer was over". Or at least that is what I used to think when I was a kid starting out of my classroom and wishing so hard that it was summer that I used to start tearing up. So the Labor Day weekend is sad for me. Even though the warmer weather usually stays around for a few weeks in September, there is just a mental block surrounding this coming weekend. Especially since the BC football games start, so my weekends won't be spent lounging on the cape doing what I love to do, they will be spend tailgating up at the Heights. Though I really enjoy the BC football games, they mean that my beaching, boating, pooling (pooling?) days are over. I can't get home at 5:15 after work and head right down to the pool for a quick dip. I'm a real summer girl at heart, and I probably should have moved south right when I got out of school, but I'm a New Englander through and through at this point. New England is the exact wrong place for someone who worships summer like I do, since we get exactly 8 weeks of warm weather here, but I'm an enigma like that.
In even less fun news, we've been dealt another senseless death to try to understand. Andrew's good friend fJeff rom childhood died very suddenly and unexpectedly on Sunday. We don't know what happened. In addition to losing someone who was 26 and died without really getting to live his life, he was a newlywed. Andrew and I went to his wedding barely over a year ago. I mean barely, they had been married for about a year and one week when he died. My heart breaks for his wife, who just a year ago was marrying someone she truly loved; she was one of the happier brides I have ever seen. Now she is making funeral arrangements for her young husband. 54 weeks ago she walked down the aisle to meet her groom, and on Friday she'll follow her groom's casket down the exact same aisle, wondering how she will ever get through this. I'll never understand why the good have to die young.

I've been tagged!
Mo, of We Are In A Fight fame (and also the famed RD at the Hilltop) tagged me in her recent blog. So here I go!
Obligatory Rules, Copy and put in your post. You post the meme rules before you start listing the facts of the darn meme. For each letter of your middle name, list a fact/statement relevant to you and/or your life, in some way. Alright? If you don’t have a middle name, pick one.Next, it’s your world, make up your own rules for the rest of this one and tag people accordingly .
Here's the thing.... I try to keep my middle off the internet, only because it isn't a regular name and it quite recognizable. It's not even a real name. So I am going to use my brother's middle name.
P - Patriots are my favorite sports team
A - Ariel is my favorite Disney character
T - tonic and Bombay Sapphire is my favorite summer drink
R - read a lot of books
I - intelligent, when compared to a 5 year old
C - curious as to how people can watach an entire baseball game without falling asleep
K - Killington is a mountain I would love love love to ski this winter.
Now, I don't have many friends who blog on any kind of regular basis. So I wasn't going to tag anyone, but I do try to respond when I get tagged. But Andrew doesn't understand what I mean when I said I was tagged, so I am taggin him. Though he doesn't ever read my posts, and when he does he reads about 2 scentences, so we'll see if he even notices the tag.
Oh, and my new rule is if you read this post, you have to leave a comment. Even if you weren't tagged!

Summertime and the Living is Easy
Aahhh.... summer vacation. I'm done with Finance and I have a glorious week off from school and work. I have a full week ahead of me to relax and unwind from the past year of work and school and stress and stress and school and work. Sadly, the mentality in this country and society doesn't include enough time for the R&R that every human needs to have in order to have a sane existance. People need a little down time, and as working American's we simply don't get enough. My father gets less than most, and that worries me sometimes. People shouldn't be as stressed out as he can get. My husband can get very stressed out too - so do I, when it comes right down to it. I don't think we should be living like this, but what are we to do about it? We need to work to pay our bills, work can be stressful, life can be stressful, and school is stressful. So once a year we savor our week of nothingness, we shed our stresses and worries for a little while and we wish life could be like this all the time.

Where have all the flowers gone?
When my brother was little, he had a friend named Robbie - they played hockey together. In fact, Robbie's father was my first hockey coach. Robbie and his family eventually moved from Quincy to Franklin and he and my brother completely lost touch, as little kids who like 45 minutes away from each other will always do. Friday morning, I heard on the news that another soldier from MA died in Iraq. This one was 29 year old Robert Pirelli. Yup - that's my brother's childood friend Robbie. http://news.bostonherald.com/localRegional/view.bg?articleid=1017721. El Presidente, it's time to bring these soldiers home. There's no longer any reason for being there. It's time to end your ridiculous war.

a little tired...
I cannot wait for vacation. As of August 24th, Andrew and I on vacation until September 4th. I cannot wait. I want to lounge on the beach, swim in the pool, go out on the boat, and just relax. It’s going to be fun. 4.5 more work days to go!
This past Saturday the Burkes came down to Falmouth for the day. It was really fun, we went to the beach, had some frozen drinks at the YC, went in the pool, had a cookout, did some serious damage to a bottle of tequila… all in all, it was a really fun day. Leah had her first sip of G&T (accidentally!!) Of COURSE I forgot my camera so I don’t have any pictures. I really need to get a new camera so I have one of those small ones that can fit very easily everywhere so I would have it once in a while, but what are you going to do. I had a really fun day, it's always good to catch up with friends!
So we had a fun weekend and now we’re pretty much just waiting for our vacation to start. Unfortunately when our vacation is over it means fall is here, but being married to Andrew has forced me to have at least an appreciation for the autumn months. I quite enjoy the fashions when the weather gets colder, at any rate. I really want a jean jacket this year. I say that almost every year, but I never seem to get one. Maybe this year I will make it priority. I also still want red pants. I never got them last year. That seems to be a trend – me wanting clothes that I never get. I have purchased three pairs of shoes (well technically one pair of sneakers and two pairs of shoes) in the past week, so I think my spending needs to be curbed for awhile. The damage I could do on zappos.com if I had the time and funds available – it would NOT be pretty. I do love shoes.
In other news, the country is finally rid of Karl Rove in any advisory capacity, whatsoever. Though he is still only a phone call away from El Presidente – which means he isn’t completely gone. But Satan, excuse me – Bush, is a lame duck by this point. Most of his domestic agenda for his second term is dead. If only we could go back in time and get out of this Iraq ridiculousness… but we can’t and I won’t comment further. That is a different blog for a different time.
In less serious news, my car will roll 50,000 miles today. (it is currently at 49,992 and I have to go to school tonight). I can't believe my little car has so many miles! My car was my first real grown up purchase, and really the only major purchase I ever made or will make by myself. My parents told me I could drive the van as long as it lasted once I graduated. My brother got to do the same thing when he graduated, and he was luckier than I was. We could drive it - but we were also responsible for all the upkeep. My brother drove it for about 2 years, saved a ton of money and bought an explorer. I graduated, inherited an electric blue 1994 Ford Aerostar and drove it for about 6 months. Then it stopped going forward. I kid you not, I would put it in Drive and it would go backwards (it would also go backwards in reverse) It started stalling at red lights and finally I just said enough. It wasn't safe and I could not afford the repairs, which probably would have cost 6 times more than the car was worth. So in November of 2003, I took my downpayment out of the bank, traveled up to Autofair in Manchester NH (where my boyfriend sold cars at the time (okay so the boyfriend was Andrew, I just like to sound like I had a string of hopelessly devoted boyfriends in my younger years!)) and picked out my beautiful brand new Carolla. My father tried to talk me out of it, he told me to buy American, to buy a bigger car - but I had been driving that Aerostar since I got my license. When you have driven a really old, really ugly, really big minivan your entire driving career, you want little and cute. A carolla is little and cute - especially since that was just after the remodel of carollas. And while, yes, buying American is good, keeps the money in America - American automakers just don't make Cute Little Cars. Toyota excells at the Cute Little Car (how cute is the Prius???). I'm really happy with my car - I do wish that we had at least one bigger car between us. We look like a clown car when we roll up to a mountain in our Carolla (Andrew drives a Sentra which is smaller than my car!) and pull out all our skiing gear. We have to fold down the backseat and stick the skis in at an angle - meanwhile everyone else shows up in their huge gas guzzlers and takes their skis out of their ski racks or storage thingies on top of their cars. But, hey, what are you gonna do. We have two small cars and I don't want to buy a new car for a couple of years. This November my little car will be paid off and if all goes well, Andrew's will be paid off by March. Then hopefully no car payments for a few years!!

I love Banana popsicles
If a you were to be a fly on my wall at home, you would be amazed. First of all, you wouldn't understand what Andrew and I were talking about, or you might need us to build you a logic bridge from point A to point B. Last night for example, Andrew was helping me with my finance homework (thank you!!) and here are some excerpts from our converstations...
Andrew: I am beginning to hate that woman
Meghan: Yeah, you would hate her, she has annoying hair
Andrew: I don't know what she means by that
Meghan: Did you check the page with all the hhfs?
Andrew: Then you have to scrolly-doo
Meghan: Um... that was a draggy box, not a scrolly-doo (said with a hint of derision)
Andrew: Wow, you're right. Okay, so you draggy-box over...
Sometimes we'll have a conversation and even I am amazed at the lack of English words that are peppered throughout our scentences, yet we understand each other. I don't know if that is common after you have been together for 6.5 years like us, or we are abnormal. I don't want to the believe the latter, but something tells me we aren't like regular people!
Speaking of regular people I did some people watching this morning at the gym. I couldn't do anything else since I forgot my iPod and at 5:45 am my brain can only function at a low level. So I started at people. I was absolutely amazed by the energy these people have. Don't they KNOW it's 5:45 in the morning?? Don't they know they should be asleep and if they are at the gym they should plug their iPods in and exercise while still being half asleep? I never really notice other people at that time in the morning, but they frighten me. There wasn't one half asleep person in the bunch (except for me, of course). That just isn't normal. I wonder if they are all on speed and just won't let me in on the fun!

my god, it's hot
I had to escape the heat today - I could have sat by the pool all day, but not being able to go inside to AC at all could have made for a very long and very hot day. So I came to Quincy to sit in the glorious air conditioning. I also joined my mother and grandparents in a lunch at Inn At Bay Point. Very nice. Lots of old people. And my grandfather got liver and onions. Blech. And he kept trying to sneak liver on to my plate. But I'm not a dummy. I caught on to him quickly :)
So I've been having an introspective week. This has worried some people, as normally the complaining that is on my blog is limited to school and how much I hate it. But fear not friends, I'm feeling a little bit better. I could do with a day sitting on the beach, but I might get that next Friday. I think Courtney and I are going to hit up the cape next Friday and have an entire day at the beach. There are a lot of 'ifs' about that day, but hopefully it works out. Anyone who wants to come is certainly welcome! Yay beach! It will require taking next Friday off, but the beach is so worth it.
Also, before I forget, congratulations to Captain Brown! Ian's been promoted. Yay for him. Yay for me for having no idea what that means, but still, good job Ian. Semper Fi!
Tuesday night my family went in to the Red Sox game. They lost. I was bored. It's fun to go in with the extended family, but if you are loyal reader of my blog, you'll know I'm not in a great family place right now, but blood is thicker than water. So, yeah, the game. Eh - bring me to a Pat's game anytime over a Sox game. I am not a member of Red Sox Nation. And I don't really care about them. Baseball has got to be one of the most boring sports known to man. I actually think watching golf is more intersting than baseball. Baseball is such a slow moving game. So being at a Sox game when I'm not really a sox fan and they lost... that was a long night. I'm sorry they lost, I certainly don't wish them any ill will - I want them to do well and I want the Yankees to suck, but I really can't get into it.
I'm off to go read my book. I would like to reread Harry Potter, but I think I will wait until next summer to read it a 3rd time. I like to reread HPs during the summer. Even though there won't be another one, I still think it's a good summer tradition for me. And now it will take me all summer to read all 7 of them. Until next June, Harry.... I'll miss you.
